AI is not just for Robots!
AI is not just for Robots!

This is not a primer on AI but a brief piece to help small businesses on how AI can help entrepreneurs to separates the wheat from the sheaf. Why because AI is over hyped and over used to sell anything with data but it is often forgot that AI has been used over many centuries but we called it statistical inference.  That is, collecting data, then inferring its possible importance and impacts.

What is AI?

From Chat GPT to Deep Seek to mobiles with voice recognition to robots and drone doing hazardous tasks Artificial Intelligence (AI) is everywhere.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the technology that enables computers and machines to simulate human learning, comprehension, problem solving, decision making, creativity and autonomy.

AI uses modern computers, with large data processing capabilities to use huge amounts of collected data inputs or large language models (LLM’s), to learn and solve problems almost like a person. AI applications are trained using huge amounts of information and learn to identify the patterns in data in order carry out tasks such as having human-like conversation, or predicting a online consumer buying behaviour. Machines can be engineered to carry out tasks, and make decisions faster than humans can in applications creating drones or robots. This offers safety and accuracy for human operators .

The key point to take away is that it’s ‘artificial’ and AI learns but also has all the tendencies of making mistakes that humans have, with biased build in my omission or commission, that is biases caused by wrong questions being asked or built into the algorithms created by programmers of such systems. Why, because humans create these systems and applications.

Why

As computer processors have become more powerful and compact in small sizes they can process more information and faster than before. This allows quicker analysis of outcomes and actions. Now you have the more power in your mobile than you ever did on large mainframe computer 60-70 years ago. Just visit MOSI, Museum of Science & Industry, and you can see the evolution of computing power and miniaturisation. These increases in computing power and accessibility has meant we can gather large amounts of data and react faster to events and make course changes than ever before.  This impacts things like who buys what goods and when as well as other aspects that we often think we are making but are decided by external factors. For example, how you ever wondered how supermarkets know what you need before your decide? It its long hot weekend supermarkets display barbeques and related food and equipment? If it’s cold they sell you coats, gloves and motoring antifreeze items? They are using what consumers may need and what the weather is likely to be to sell more goods. This is the classic case of the use of data but now it can be automated and personalised.

Applications

We know that people do not all react to massages, medications or buy goods or services in the same way. Automation ad personalisation focus selling not just on special occasions but on personal events, such as individual birthdays.

Other AI productivity apps

Some niche apps.

  • 3D modeling: Generate the third dimension with Spline AI3DFY.ai, and Meshcapade.

  • AI agents: Automate tasks with AI using AI AgentAgentGPT, and HyperWrite Assistant.

  • Research: Take a deep dive with aomnigenei, and Consensus.

  • AI app builders: Quickstart your interface and databases with SoftrPowerApps, and AppSheet (see the full list here or try an AI website builder).

  • Universal search: Dropbox Dash is a new product that connects with all your data sources. From that point on, you can create dashboards to round up all the info about a project or team, and run deep AI-powered searches on your cloud files.

  • File organization: I shudder imagining the level of disorder going on in my local file system (spoiler alert: it's absolute chaos). Perhaps it's time to make it Sparkle: this product manages your Downloads, Documents, and Desktop locations, reading file names and organizing everything into neat subfolders. Mac only for now, but so unique it deserves a shout.

  • Screen sharing: Loom was already a time-saving option to record your screen, helping you present a new project or share a quick update. Its AI features add even more: based on your presentation, it will automatically give a name, label the sections, and offer a topic breakdown so your team knows what to expect with a glance.

AI for productivity: the AI-powered you

I'm a full-blown AI enthusiast. Even still, I like to think that these are merely tools. They save you time, spark ideas, and offer new angles. Remember to always use your judgment and keep your attention on the objective of what you're working on.

Another big risk: losing too much time feeding prompts to the AI, or generating so much output that it becomes difficult to edit, manipulate, and put together. Sharpen your cutting and editing skills to curb the excess, and you'll do great.

With all that in mind, it's time to enjoy. Try out these tools, and see why AI is the next big productivity leap.
